Book Review Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care

 By Carl Gilbert, M.D.

Brian D. Smedley, Adrienne Y. Stith, and Alan R. Nelson, Editors, Committee on Understanding and Eliminating Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care – in partnership with the Board on Health Policy of the Institutes of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies – have published through the National Academies Press a study named Unequal Treatment: Confronting Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Health Care.

In 1999, Congress requested IOM to assess the extent of disparities in the types and quality of health services received by racial and ethnic minorities and non-minorities in the U.S. ; explore factors that may contribute to inequities in care; and recommend policies and practices to eliminate the inequities.

The report of the study, published as a book format, found that many preexisting studies show significant variation in the rates of medical procedures by race, even when insurance status, income, age, and severity of conditions are comparable.  The study shows furthermore that racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. are less likely to receive even routine medical procedures and experience a lower quality of health services.

For reducing those disparities, the authors of the report made some recommendations, such as increasing awareness about disparities among the general public, health care providers, insurance companies, and policy-makers.

This book will certainly find a significant place among other reference texts that address and ponder the health gap issues plaguing the American society.
